Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is the removal of unwanted hair from parts of the body through selective photothermolysis. This technology uses an invisible beam of light combined with constant heat to penetrate the hair follicle. This causes irreparable damage to the follicle and destroys the root. Once the technician targets the hairs to be removed, he/she directs the laser at the hairs. As soon as the laser finds the melanin, which is the dark part of the hair, the beam will be activated.
This procedure works best for people with dark hair and fair skin. Since melanin is also present in the skin, if you have dark skin because of sun tanning or if your skin is naturally dark, the procedure will not work for you. Those with red and blonde hair are not good candidates for this procedure either because the hairs are not dark enough for the laser to detect.
The best time for laser hair removal to be effective is when the hair is in the anagen stage, which means the hair is actively growing. Since this stage lasts for many years, as long as the hair is growing, you can have it removed by laser. During this stage it is easier to find the hair and target it for removal.
Four types of lasers provide fast and easy removal of hair. These are:
- Alexandrite
- Ruby
- Diode
- ND and LP ND Yag
All of these products have been approved for use in removing unwanted hair.
Although the laser itself is important, the skill of the technician also plays a part in the effective use of laser hair removal. The technician will likely explain how the process works, using words such as pulse, frequency and time. Long pulses lasers are considered to be the safest ones to use because the energy levels can be adjusted according to your skin type. The time between the pulses of light are longer so that the follicle has time to cool off before the next beam. The size of the area from which you want hair removed will affect the number of treatments you will need. With a larger area, the technician can go deeper into the follicles to remove more hair.
Laser hair removal is not just one treatment and all the hair is gone. You will need several treatments before you start to see any results.
